FINMA approves Switzerland’s first Bitcoin ETF for retail investors
Latest News
Published: Oct 20, 2026
The Swiss regulator, FINMA, has approved Switzerland’s first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) accessible to retail investors, citing a growing interest in cryptocurrency investments, particularly Bitcoin (BTC).
While no specific fund issuer was named, FINMA stated that multiple providers have submitted or announced Bitcoin ETF applications.
Previously, in August 2025, SIX Swiss Exchange announced that iShares would launch a Bitcoin ETF backed by BTC stored in cold wallets held by Coinbase Custody International Limited. These ETPs are not subject to FINMA approval but are governed by SIX Exchange Regulation.
The approval marks a significant regulatory milestone for the launch of Switzerland’s first retail-accessible Bitcoin ETF.
In 2021, FINMA authorized a fund for qualified investors that invests in a basket of cryptocurrencies, granting an exemption from standard risk diversification rules due to Bitcoin’s long trading history and high trading volume.
However, the regulator emphasized that BTC investments carry market risks, such as the potential for significant capital loss.
Switzerland is renowned for its crypto-friendly environment. In 2023, the city of Lugano became one of the first city administrations globally to accept Bitcoin and Tether USDt (USDT) for all municipal fees.
