European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated in her address at the IMF Annual Meetings on Saturday that while September's 3.8% euro area inflation rate was largely due to high energy costs, which the ECB expects to ease next year, the digital euro is imminent.

"The digital euro will further stimulate innovation and competition in retail payments, ensuring that the continued co-existence of public and private solutions underpins Europe’s strategic autonomy in payments."

Lagarde added that the ECB is currently developing the digital euro, intended for day-to-day transactions, to complement cash. Cointelegraph reported on the ECB's launch of Pontes, a system allowing financial institutions to settle wholesale tokenized asset transactions in central bank money, in September.
