Netflix has released a trailer for an upcoming eight-episode series about the fall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, focusing on former CEO Sam "SBF" Bankman-Fried and his colleague and girlfriend, Caroline Ellison, who headed FTX's sister company, Alameda Research.
The series, set to premiere on November 19, explores the idea that "going all-in every time is the mathematically optimal strategy," a reference to FTX's high-risk investments using customer funds.
"Lying isn't bad for a good cause," Julia Garner (playing Ellison) says in the trailer. This line reflects Ellison's testimony at Bankman-Fried's 2023 criminal trial, where she stated he believed rules against lying and stealing didn't necessarily apply to effective altruism.
Bankman-Fried, Ellison, and others linked to FTX and Alameda were indicted in December 2022 following the exchange's collapse. Ellison pleaded guilty and testified against SBF, while Bankman-Fried went to trial and was found guilty on seven felony counts of fraud, receiving a 25-year prison sentence. As of October, he had pending motions for a presidential pardon from Donald Trump and a review of his conviction by the US Supreme Court. Ellison was released from federal custody in January.
