Netflix FTX Trailer ‘Upset Me’ in First 30 Seconds: Former FTX COO

The upcoming Netflix drama series The Altruists, which depicts the FTX exchange collapse, left a strong impression on Constance Wang, the former FTX COO. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Wang expressed her dissatisfaction with the trailer's portrayal of her former colleagues, specifically mentioning Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried.

“The first 30 seconds were enough to upset me,” Wang stated, adding that she stopped watching after that.

She found the trailer's depiction of Ellison to be inconsistent with her personal experience and noted that Bankman-Fried was also portrayed as more socially awkward than he actually was.

FTX, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, collapsed in November 2022 due to customer fund misappropriation, leading to a $8.9 billion shortfall. Alameda Research, FTX's sister company, utilized customer funds to cover trading losses, a situation now known as the Alameda gap.

Netflix released the trailer in early October for the eight-episode series. The show is scheduled to premiere globally on November 19, 2026.

Following FTX's collapse, Wang founded Pacifica, a crypto trading platform, in 2025. She aims to enhance the platform with artificial intelligence capabilities, providing strategic tools for investors.

Wang also shared insights into the challenges faced by institutional investors during the FTX bankruptcy proceedings, which restricted their interactions with former FTX personnel.

Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison faced legal consequences for their roles in FTX's collapse. Ellison reached a plea deal to testify against Bankman-Fried and was released from prison in January 2023. Bankman-Fried, convicted on seven felony counts, was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March 2024, with a potential release in 2044. His lawyers recently requested a review of his fraud conviction at the Supreme Court, and he has also applied for a presidential pardon.
