White House crypto council chief Patrick Witt steps down

Published: October 15, 2026
Patrick Witt, the executive director of the White House’s Crypto Council, is leaving his post for a new opportunity in the private sector.
"Serving in this administration has been the privilege of a lifetime," wrote Witt in a Thursday post, expressing his anticipation for continuing to support U.S. technological advancements "in the private sector."
Witt played a key role in advising on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which aimed to create the first comprehensive U.S. regulatory framework for the crypto market. The U.S. Senate failed to pass a cloture motion on the legislation in September, making further progress this session unlikely.
His departure leaves a leadership gap as he was the last remaining staffer on the White House’s council, following the prior exits of David Sacks, the White House crypto and AI czar, and Harry Jung, the deputy director, in March and July, respectively.
Bo Hines, the council’s former executive director, announced his departure in August 2025, later taking a role as a strategic adviser at stablecoin issuer Tether.
Cointelegraph has reached out to the White House for comment on Witt’s departure and potential replacements, and will update this article accordingly.
