Australia Raises Rates to 18-Year High Due to AI and Energy Costs
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has raised its benchmark rate to 4.85%, citing rising technology costs from AI investment and higher energy prices. This is the highest rate in 18 years.
On Tuesday, the RBA's monetary policy board voted 6–3 to increase the interest rate by 25 basis points, forecasting that inflation would remain elevated throughout 2027. The board attributed this to AI-related investment, along with higher fuel and commodity prices stemming from the Middle East conflict.
"AI-related investment is driving rapid growth in prices for technology-related goods," the board stated.
Jim Chalmers, Australian Treasurer, expressed the challenges this decision poses for Australian families and businesses: "It’s difficult news for many Australians who are already paying a hefty price for circumstances outside their control."
This rate hike contrasts with the US Federal Reserve's decision to hold rates last week, despite warnings about the AI investment boom's impact on price pressures.
