In a shift of tone ahead of Israel’s upcoming elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed blockchain and cryptocurrency as potential tools to evade international financial sanctions.
Netanyahu made the remarks during an interview with Israel’s Channel 10 economic network, stating that Israel is exploring blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies to circumvent potential banking sanctions.
“Blockchain is an alternative to sanctions,” he said.
This statement has sparked a range of reactions, with several political opponents and the Bank of Israel challenging the idea.
Opposing Views:
- Yashar Party Leader Gadi Eisenkot: “The BibiCoin vision is a threat to national security.”
- Bank of Israel: In a statement, the Bank rejected Netanyahu’s proposal, affirming that cryptocurrencies “cannot be used as a route for bypassing sanctions.”
Public and Media Response:
At an anti-government rally in Tel Aviv, some onlookers expressed skepticism, stating that a blockchain-based economy wouldn’t be an improvement. Media critics also questioned the feasibility and potential risks of using cryptocurrency to evade sanctions.
