THORChain’s RUNE token experienced a 13% surge following the recent $6.3 billion Binance hack. According to TradingView data, RUNE climbed to $0.67 at the time of writing, rising from a low of $0.59.

Onchain investigator ZachXBT reported that funds stolen from Binance and the September Bitget hack had passed through THORChain before being combined at the same Ethereum address. TRM Labs and Chainalysis also linked the Binance hack to North Korea-linked TraderTraitor.

THORChain, a protocol enabling users to swap assets across blockchains, has previously been used by North Korean hackers to launder funds stolen in the $1.4 billion Bybit hack in February 2025 and the $388 million Bitget hack.

Following the Bitget exploit, THORChain faced criticism for not blocking the attacker's addresses, with Gracy Chen, Bitget's CEO, calling for action. However, THORChain rejected the request, stating that it has no mechanism to block individual swaps, and node operators can address security risks through trading pauses.

The Bybit hack also led to internal divisions within THORChain, with core developer Pluto announcing his departure and validator TCB threatening to leave over the handling of North Korea-linked funds.
